APPEARANCE: The BMW R1200GS Adventure is a tough looking motorcycle without any tweaking but throw a few bolt-on accessories and guards on to an Adventure and ‘tough’ starts to look nearly indestructable. We love seeing Adventures plated in extra aluminum grills, guards and covers so we’ve doubled up and put some parts that would normally be reserved for the ‘Protection’ section also here in the ‘Appearance’ section.
PROTECTION: If you plan on taking your Adventure down the old dusty trail we highly recommend adding a little reinforcement to a few critical areas of the motorcycle to minimize the risk of getting stuck on the side of the trail in the event of a small wreck. These guards are functional and definitely will make your Adventure look the part.
ERGONOMICS: The R1200GS Adventure is one of the largest adventure touring motorcycles on the market which can make it a bit intimidating to riders under 6’6″. Thankfully, there are some excellent aftermarket parts available to alter the ergonomics of an Adventure and make it accessible to more of us ‘normal’ riders ;)
LIGHTING: For the R1200GS Adventure, BMW offers supplemental lights as a factory installed option, but for some people the OEM light kit may not offer the amount or kind of light they are really looking for. Thankfully, the aftermarket has once again stepped in and provided a range of options to help illuminate the road ahead and (sometimes just as importantly) more of what lies just off of the road.
LUGGAGE: With a range of approximately 400 miles and rugged reliability, the Adventure is always ready for your next journey but you’ll want some extra space for clothes, food and (perhaps) a calendar. That’s where luggage systems come in. BMW, Touratech and others make extremely durable hard and soft luggage for the 1200 Adventure. Our favorite place to stash a few small items is the Crash Bar Bag set from Touratech.
WINDSHIELDS: The standard windshield on the BMW R1200GS Adventure is pretty impressive with its’ adjustable main shield and supplemental ‘side-winglets’ but some folks still want more. By adding lips to the standard screen or by installing a larger aftermarket windshield riders can get even more protection from the elements. Afterall, you never know what you might encounter when you’re traversing continents.
PERFORMANCE: The R1200GS Adventure is a big motorcycle but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be sporty or quick. With a dialled in suspension and booming exhaust the Adventure can become a sportbike riders worst nightmare. But please don’t rub it in after you brake later into corners, get on the gas earlier out of corners and pass your sportbike buddies, they can be sensitive… If all else fails, tell ’em you like how shiny their bike is.

GEAR: The BMW Adventure demands respect and so should you. Wearing appropriate riding gear while on an Adventure will complete the image of the rugged, ‘go-anywhere’ motorcyclist but it will also add to your enjoyment and overall safety while riding. We HIGHLY recommend the Rallye Suit line for all GS riders and particularly for those with Adventures.
