BMW ShiftCam Variable Valve Timing Comes to the 2019 Lineup

For 2019, BMW Motorrad is shaking up the motorcycle performance game with its introduction of ShiftCam Variable Valve Timing. For the first time, VVT comes to the new BMW motorcycle models, adding performance, stability, comfort and control to this already-incredible array of bikes. The new 1,254 cc two-cylinder flat engine is available with the BMW R1250GS and the BMW R1250RT as well. Let’s examine what’s different about BMW’s technology for the new model year.

What’s So Special about ShiftCam VVT?

BMW Motorrad introduced a fairly straight-forward design with an intake camshaft featuring two lobes per valve. It also has a sliding actuator which determines when the lobes are in use. This helps the engine switch between a light load and heavy load when needed. While operating on a part load, the engine is fuel-efficient and energy-saving. When the driver demands more, the full load cams adjust to offer an unbeatable performance.

This ShiftCam technology combined with the larger engine is what makes the 2019 lineup so exciting. What’s truly unique about the setup is how the intake valves stagger their order. This provides a more efficient burn by creating a swirling air-fuel mixture.

The new bikes produce 134 horsepower and 105.5 lb.-ft. of torque. Considering the previous setup had 123 horsepower and 92.2 lb.-ft. of torque, this is quite the upgrade. This year’s models also boast of a lower idle, improvement in fuel economy and reduced emissions.
