Self-driving cars are the biggest innovation in the automotive industry since seatbelts. We’ve heard tons of talk about the development of self-driving cars in recent years, with several success stories and, naturally, a few hiccups.
What we haven’t heard much about is self-driving technology in motorcycles. Recently, BMW Motorrad developed an innovative, new self-riding BMW R 1200 GS motorcycle. Unlike self-driving cars, however, this BMW motorcycle is a tool to help the automotive powerhouse develop new safety technology. BMW Motorrad did not develop this prototype to get self-riding motorcycles on the road.
In recent years, many car companies have developed life-changing safety technology that has enhanced many people’s experiences on the road. Rear view cameras, warning and systems, and even hands-free cell phone access, have paved the way for safer travels.
BMW wants to bring enhanced safety to motorcycles, allowing riders to experience the peace-of-mind that drivers often get to experience.
“The aim of the prototype is to gather additional knowledge with regards driving dynamics in order to detect dangerous situations early on and thus support the driver with appropriate safety systems while turning at intersections or when braking suddenly, for example,” according to BMW Motorrad.
Specifically, BMW wants to enhance rider stability, comfort and enhanced riding pleasure. New technology developed through this self-riding motorcycle will improve BMW motorcycle safety, and quite possibly, motorcycle safety across the board.
