2012 S 1000 RR (MSRP: $15,050*)
Model Year 2012 Changes (as explained by BMW of North America)
In 2009, BMW Motorrad took the sports bike world by storm with its introduction of the new S 1000 RR. Fresh from the Berlin factory, the RR established a new set of rules by which superbikes are to be measured. Results speak for the themselves: Over 160 victories and 20 titles in international championships and unanimous recognition as the new liter class benchmark by the specialized media and riders alike.
Now, only two years after its introduction, we are excited to announce the model year 2012 S 1000 RR model update which has been presented to the international media in Valencia, Spain. The new RR will feature a sleeker, more aggressive design, four exciting new colors, improvements on power delivery, riding precision, agility, suspension and electronics, all of which will further establish its supremacy.
This page details the model year 2012 S 1000 RR updates but before you get started, we want to emphasize that the RR updates result in very significant improvements that go well beyond a typical “model update”. BMW Motorrad has made the best of the vast feedback from its RR racing programs to create an RR that without a doubt improves on the previous benchmark. The new look and dynamics should convince any enthusiasts that the MY12 RR is the superbike to own and ride!

3) Key Improvement Areas
Engine / Power Delivery
Optimized torque curve | More linear delivery and significant torque increase between 5,500 and 9,000 rpm for strong acceleration out of turns |
Expansion from two to three power delivery curves | One curve each for Rain and Sport modes and a third curve for Race and Slick modes to customize power to any situation |
More powerful Rain mode | Rain mode max power delivery increases to 163 hp for enhanced performance when riding on wet surfaces |
Smaller secondary ratio | Now 17 / 45 previously 17 / 44; improved response in any gear |
Refined Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control tuning | Borrowing from the racing experience the new tuning extracts even more performance |
Enlarged ram air cross section | New steering head geometry with a 20% greater ram air cross section; greater air flow efficiency improves torque delivery |
Relocated catalytic converters | Improved power curve/heat shield elimination (now not needed) |
Throttle Actuation
Reconfigured throttle for enhanced | Two configurations: gentle / progressive in Rain mode; direct with immediate response in Sport, Race and Slick modes |
Reduced twisting force and quick-action throttle | The throttle acutation effort has been reduced thus improving the throttle “feel”; full-throttle opening has also been reduced to facilitate full acceleration with an optimal twist of the grip |
Riding Dynamics / Agility
Better hanndling, lighter feel, quicker side-to-side transitions, improved steering accuracy with increased feedback from the front wheel, improved directional stability through the following changes:
New adjustable steering damper | Mechanically adjustable steering damper with 10 settings |
Shortened wheelbase | New 1,422.7 mm / previous 1,432 mm |
Increased wheel castor | New 98.5 mm / previous 95.9 mm |
Forged and milled fork bridge in a new design with revised offset | New 29.5 mm / previous 32.0 mm |
Revised steering head angle | New 65.99 degrees / previous 66.10 degrees |
Raised swing arm pivot | 4 mm higher thn previous model |
Shorter rear suspension strut | 4 mm shorter than previous model |
Shortened fork excess length | 5 mm less than previous model |
Suspension
Revised spring elements | Wider range of suspension adjustability to adjust to all conditions, from race track use to public road riding |
Enlarged rear suspension piston rod | From 14 mm to 18 mm for faster and more precise build-up of compression stage damping |
Revised low and mid-speed damping adjusters for the rear suspension | More linear increase of damping over the entire adjustment range |
Modified spring strut | Now 4 mm shorter |
Instrument Cluster / Heated Grips
Heated grips for the first time in the superbike segment | Heated grips enhance the riding experience in cold weather; for race track or road use |
Redesigned tachometer | Easier to read |
Instrument cluster brightness | 5-level diming for the instrument cluster illumination |
New function | “Best lap in progress”, “Speed Warning”, deactivation of “Lamp” fault message when headlamp / license plate holder are removed |
Aerodynamics / Styling
Newly added front side winglets | Optimize aerodynamics and reduce the impact pressure on hands and arms at high speeds |
New, slimmer rear section | The revised rear section is now considerably slimmer and includes two new gills |
Restyled, moer aggressive left and right side body panels | Left-hadn side enlarged cooling air outlet for increased air circulation and a better view of the engine; right-hand side gill design has a new, more aggressive orientation |
Optimized air intake silencer cover | New, additional air openings help optimize the termperature of the on-board electronics / control unit |
Weight savings from new parts | The new parts, including a lighter seat, achieve weight savings of more than 8% when compared to the parts they are replacing |
New heel plates and thinner stabilizers on passenger footrests | Reduced boot wear and tear and improved ergonomics |
Revised RR logo | Tells onlookers the rider has chosen the benchmark superbike |
