2011 BMW F800R

We are very excited to announce that in January of 2011, BMW will introduce the highly anticipated 2011 F 800 R. Although this is the first year that the F800R will be available to American customers, this model has been available internationally for the last two years and has made quite a splash particularly in urban environments. We can’t wait to start blasting all over San Francisco on one of these hooligan roadsters because it’s gonna be an awesome bike. But you probably want to know more about the technical specs and features of the bike than you want to hear about us launching off of the cross streets of Potrero Hill, so here it is… :)

The 2011 F 800 R is going to offer customers a light weight (390 lbs. dry, 439 lbs. wet) motorcycle with extremely agile and responsive handling. The ‘R’ features the 800cc inline (parallel) twin cylinder engine that has become famous for its’ ability to propel F800GS’s through all kinds of terrain while maintaining the kind of smooth, reliable operation required by a middle-weight tourer like the F800ST. To give the F800R that extra ‘something special’ BMW has specially tuned the engine to pump out 87 hp at 8,000 rpm and 63 lb/ft of torque at 6,000 rpm (compared to 85hp at 7,500 rpm and 62 lb/ft at 5,750 rpm for the F800GS). To make the most out of this strong revving twin, BMW also fitted the F800R with shorter gearing. While the first three gears are comparable to those on the F800GS, the gear ratios for 4th, 5th and 6th gear are shorter than those offered in the F800GS. In fact, the F 800 R’s 6th gear matches the F 800 GS’s 5th gear. This means you’ll have stronger acceleration in every gear which, frankly, equals more fun!

If you have never heard the sound that one of these 800cc papallel twin engines produce, you owe it to yourself as a motorcycle enthusiast to come down and check one out. The BMW twin cylinder F-bikes make a truly unique growl that turns into a crisp bark when matched up with a tuned aftermarket exhaust. If you prefer a bike that is quieter than louder, you’ll still appreciate the way that an F 800 goes about its’ business without disturbing neighbors or sleeping babies until you decide it’s time to cut loose and really hammer the throttle.

Something that’s a little bit more difficult to describe is the young, edgy, mechanical and distinctive personality that the F800R will bring with it when it arrives Stateside. While the S1000RR rewrote the rulebook for the Superbike class and established BMW as a VERY serious player in that segment, the F800R brings BMW to another group of riders that would historically have no reason to look at our brand. The F800R is designed to be an emotional motorcycle that is capable of amusing the most daring and thrill-seeking of motorcyclists while maintaing the kind of reliability and durability that BMW has become known for. This motorcycle wants to be ridden often and it wants to be ridden hard. The F800R is the motorcycle of choice for 3 time stunting world champion Chris Pfeiffer and he pushes his equipment harder than just about anyone.

BUT, let us not forget that this is a BMW Motorcycle and that means practicality and real-world usability are permanently at the top of the design brief. The F800R can be equipped with an optional low seat that will drop the seat height to a very manageable 30.5 inches allowing less experienced or smaller riders the kind of increased confidence that only a low seat height can provide. Additionally, a number of factory installed options are available on the F800R that are simply not available on other motorcycles in this segment. ABS brakes, heated grips, tire-pressure monitoring systems, accessory sockets, alarms and on-board computers are all popular options for all kinds of riders and provide a level of comfort and safety that other manufacturers simply cannot match.

So there you have it, our first introduction to the F800R. If you have any questions or would like to find out how you can get one of these limited production motorcycles give our sales department a call at 415-503-9954 or e-mail us at mcsales@bmwmotorcycle.com.

* Please be aware that the base MSRP shown above does not include the standard $495.00 destination charge that BMW of North America adds to all BMW Motorcycles that are sold here. Still, $9,950.00 plus $495.00 destination is still a GREAT deal for a base model F800R.

Check out this video of Chris Pfeiffer riding an F800R through the BMW Tower in Germany. One of our favorite videos of all time.

Rumor has it that while filming this, Pfeiffer actually had a slight mishap that caused him to almost crash into the CEO of BMW. Thankfully, no one was hurt and BMW’s head honcho remained very excited about the video even after his close encounter with a Metzeler tire or two ;)
